‘The Matrix’ slips from Will Smith’s hands again?
Will Smith’s latest post on social media about ‘The Matrix’ sparks frenzy
A new film about The Matrix is in the works, and despite his latest teasing, Will Smith will not be part of it.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that after the Academy-winning actor’s new post on Instagram sparked a frenzy among his fans, he might come on board for the film he previously reportedly missed.
The post was cryptic and borrowed the themes of the epic sci-fi film. “In 1997, the Wachowski’s offered Will Smith the role of Neo in The Matrix. Smith turned it down,” the Matrix-style computer font stated.
“He chose Wild Wild West, believing it was a better fit for him at the time. But the question remains: What would The Matrix have been like with Will Smith as Neo? Wake up, Will… The Matrix has you…”
It is unclear what was Will aiming to achieve by sharing The Matrix-related post, but what was certain was the cost of his choice.
In comparison, his Wild Wild West was panned by critics and was considered a box-office failure.
On the other hand, The Matrix was hailed as an era-defining film in the sci-fi genre.
In the meantime, David Goddard, the writer-director behind The Martian, was hired last year to helm the new Matrix film for Warner Bros.
The Wachowski sibling, under whose direction the 1999 movie shot to stunning success, will not direct the film for the first time.
However, Lana Wachowski will reportedly work as an executive producer on the project.
